Dr. John Mather

Ph.D. Neuropsychologist

Dr. Mather is a Board-Certified and Licensed Psychologist in Arizona, with an illustrious 18-year journey that began in school psychology and evolved into neuropsychology. He is renowned nationally for his expertise in discerning learning differences, including Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia. Beyond these, Dr. Mather’s proficiency extends to areas like ADHD, Tic Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, as well as anxiety and mood disorders. He is deeply committed to exploring the intricate link between neurological functioning and behavior, understanding that our actions, emotions, thoughts, and even sensory processing are rooted in our neurological responses.

Dr. Mather firmly believes that behavior stems from neurological sources. This belief underscores the importance of first deciphering a patient’s neurocognitive strengths and irregularities before diving into diagnostic and treatment endeavors. He contends that traditional psychological approaches, which rely heavily on behavioral observation for diagnosis and intervention, often lead to misdiagnoses and, consequently, less effective treatments. A testament to his deep knowledge and dedication to neuropsychological assessment is his co-authored work, “Large Scale Neural Networks and Neuropsychological Testing: An Attempt to Move Forward” (Koziol, et.al.).

Furthermore, Dr. Mather’s extensive understanding of special education laws and protocols uniquely positions him to bridge neuropsychological insights with educational requirements. He is adept at guiding parents and educational professionals in crafting effective school-based strategies tailored to individual needs.

At ANC, we host graduate-level practicum students, interns, and postdoctoral residents. Each of these qualified individuals receives direct clinical supervision from Dr. Volrich and/or Dr. Mather.
